Rivian R1 Configurations Explained, Dual Large to Quad Max

The R1 order menu is down to four R1 configurations. Dual Large, Dual Max, Tri Max, and Quad Max. We already covered the Dual Standard, leaving the lineup, so rather than go back over why it happened, the more useful question for anyone sitting in the configurator right now is which of the four actually gives you the color, wheels, interior, and drive modes you are after.
Start with the two Dual trims, because on paper, they are almost the same vehicle. Same colors, same wheel choices, same interiors, and the same Performance Upgrade path that unlocks Sport, Soft Sand, and Rally. What separates Dual Large from Dual Max is range, a bigger battery, and the Forest Edge interior, which only appears on the Max for a limited time. If you are cross-shopping those two, you are really deciding how much range you want, not which features you walk away with.
Moving up to Tri and Quad is when the order sheet opens. Storm Blue and Canyon Red appear for the first time, neither of which can be ordered on the Dual trims. The modes that were locked away lower down, Drift, Rock Crawl, and Conserve, all come standard up here. The Quad then goes its own way on wheels, dropping the Sport and Range sets, and the rest of the lineup runs and swaps in Super Sport, Dune, and the Burnished Bronze finish. It is also the only one of the four that cannot be had with the lighter wheels at all.

Notes
Sport, Soft Sand, and Rally are available on the Dual Large and Dual Max only with the Performance Upgrade. They come standard on Tri Max and Quad Max. Storm Blue and Canyon Red, the off-road drive modes (Drift, Rock Crawl, Conserve), and the Tri and Quad interiors are limited to Tri Max and Quad Max. Quad Max runs its own wheel set (Super Sport, Dune, Burnished Bronze) and cannot be ordered with the Sport, Range, or 20 inch All-Terrain wheels.
None of this really changes the basic shape of the lineup. The Dual trims are still the value play, and the Tri is still the one that gets you most of the capability without paying all the way up to the Quad. What the table makes obvious is how much of the good stuff now lives behind the Tri and Quad wall. Worth knowing before you talk yourself into a Dual and then go hunting for Rock Crawl in the drive menu and come up empty.
Anyway. That is the order menu as it stands, at least until Rivian decides to move things around again.

Wasn’t rock crawl always only for Quad (and I guess, later, Tri as well)? And despite being part of the performance upgrade, my DM Adventure came with soft sand mode, and Rally and Sport were added during one of the updates. No reason to have conserve on DM vehicles as they are basically in conserve mode by default until switching to AWD on a climb or off road.
Rivian may be up to something… All models are coming with no inventory. R1 2027? (fingers crossed)
