The Rivian R2 Options You Can’t Get at Launch

Heads up for anyone holding an R2 reservation. Rivian is launching R2 as a Performance Launch Edition only, and a real chunk of what got shown at SXSW isn’t going to be available when production kicks off. If you had a specific build in mind, there’s a decent chance you’ll be waiting until later in 2026, and some of it might slip into 2027.

The strategy from Rivian is simple. Keep the build sheet small in the early months of mass production, work the line until it’s running clean, and only start adding configurations once Launch Edition demand slows down. Makes sense from a manufacturing standpoint, even if it stings a little when the color or trim you wanted isn’t on the menu yet.

Here’s what’s not available at launch:

  • Premium variant
  • Standard variant (the single motor R2)
  • 19″ Machined Graphite wheels
  • 20″ Bicolor Carbon wheels
  • Borealis exterior color
  • Forest Green exterior color
  • Coastal Cloud Signature interior
  • Black Crater standard interior
  • LiDAR
  • Rivian Autonomy Processor (RAP1)
  • Gen 3 Autonomy Computer

The good news is Rivian has confirmed that Borealis, Forest Green, and Coastal Cloud Signature will come online later in 2026. That’s a quicker turnaround than I was expecting on those three. What’s not clear yet is whether they’ll still be Launch Edition only when they arrive, or if the broader trim lineup will already be open by then. Rivian hasn’t said one way or the other.

The bigger gap in my opinion is the Standard single motor. That was the trim a lot of folks were eyeballing for the $45k starting price, and it’s nowhere in the early production picture. Performance Launch Edition is the top of the R2 lineup, so the price most early R2s actually leave the factory at is going to land well above the number that grabbed everyone’s attention at the reveal.

Rivian is expected to build somewhere in the 20,000 to 25,000 R2 range for 2026. Sounds like a lot until you compare it to the reservation list, which is bigger. Even Launch Edition holders should be ready for a queue.

Honestly if your dream config isn’t at launch, sitting tight is fine. Early production R2s are going to be the ones reviewers and YouTubers tear into first (that’s me), and the ones that surface whatever weird issues only show up in real customer hands. Buying into the second wave isn’t a step backwards. It’s usually just a more sorted version of the same car.

We’ll keep tracking which configurations and options open up as the year goes on.

  1. I could accept a delay to get Coastal Cloud if they told us the launch edition package would still be available.

  2. I’m a Day One Res (non-Rivian owner) waiting on Performance w/LIDAR. I really hope Launch Green is carried over to at least the initial LIDAR equipped vehicles, but I’ll have a color or two as a back up if not.

I need my car by March 2027 so also crossing my fingers the timeline lines up. If not I guess I’ll need to consider IX3 or EX60, but hoping the stars align for the R2. I’d rather give RJ my money.

  3. “If your build needs Borealis paint or the single motor drivetrain, that’s two different timelines you’re waiting on, and there’s a real chance those two pieces don’t end up available until pretty deep into 2027.”

Why would Borealis paint be delayed til deep into 2027??

  4. To clarify your last paragraph..both Borealis AND the single motor variant may be delayed deep into 2027? or the single motor variant IN Borealis may not be see until deep into 2027.

    Thanks

  5. I’m not sure where I am in the order with my reservation that I made in early 2024.
I need a vehicle within a few months as my Polestar 2 lease is ending but I do want the Lidar option . Maybe I can get a loaner from Rivian 🤣🤣.

    • Maybe Rivian could offer very short term leases (or even month-to-month until your desired configuration is scheduled for production and delivery)?
