The Entry R2 Standard Now Starts at $44,990, Arrives Summer 2027

Rivian has filled in the details on the cheapest R2 in the lineup. The base R2 Standard now carries a firm starting price of $44,990 before destination, and Rivian is pointing to a Summer 2027 arrival.

That is the version a lot of us have been waiting on. It is rear-wheel drive, rated at 350 horsepower and 355 lb-ft of torque, with a Rivian-estimated range of 275 miles or more.

I actually got to spend time with the R2 Standard in person at the R2 First Drive in Park City, Utah, and walked through it on video. Video tour here.

Up to now this trim was the blank spot on the spec sheet. Back at the full lineup reveal Rivian had it penciled in for late 2027 with an “around $45,000” price and not much else attached to it. So two things actually moved here. The price is set, just under the long-promised $45,000 mark, and the window pulled forward into the summer rather than the back half of the year.

On paper it shares the single-motor setup with the Standard Long Range, same 350 hp and 355 lb-ft. The difference is the battery. The smaller pack is why the range lands at 275-plus instead of the Long Range’s 345. You are giving up some miles to get under the price. If you are trying to figure out where this trim fits against the rest, the full spec breakdown walks through what each step up adds and what it cuts.

The rest is still open. Rivian says more details will come closer to production launch, so battery size, the interior, and the options list are not locked in yet. The price and the timing are the parts that firmed up today.

  1. Hmmmmm, You know what I hate I hate marketing people. I hate when they over promise and under deliver and that’s what I think the standard configuration is.. I think people are losing sight of the fact that this is a $45,000 car not including destination and taxes so it’s really close to a $50,000. I’m sorry the interior and give me a break the lack of the signature, Rivian, flashlight! This is not the 45,000/$50,000 car we were sold at the reveal in the $75,000 tax break doesn’t exist anymore ! I know Rivian has a playbook similar to Tesla, but that doesn’t mean they have to follow Elon Musk over promising and under delivering. I was so excited at the announcement at the reveal and my wife absolutely wants an R3 but we’re both second-guessing or decision. I hope the team at Rivian can figure how to deliver what was sold to us I really would love to own one.

  2. Hey Jose,

Thank you so much for showing this, it’s great to take a look at the standard version. It’s more basic, but in my opinion is a great option, for the price you’re getting a RWD 350hp SUV, as capable in terms of autonomy as the more expensive models, less things that can brake long term (front motor, rear drop down window / wiper)

I have one questions though, you can not get the tow package unless you get the AWD version, but the car is still rated for towing, does that mean you will have the option to add an aftermarket tow hitch to the vehicle?

    Thank you!
