Rivian R2 Prototype Spotted Off-Road Testing with Sensor Equipment

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe just shared some fresh shots of the R2 out in the wild. The camouflaged prototype was spotted off-roading and “stretching its legs” on rocky terrain, giving us a closer look at its ground clearance and suspension articulation.

Eagle-eyed fans will notice some equipment mounted on the roof, which appears to be part of Rivian’s development hardware. The setup likely includes LiDAR, GPS antennas, and high-precision cameras used for data logging and calibration. These tools help Rivian engineers gather detailed information about vehicle dynamics, traction, and off-road behavior as they fine-tune both the hardware and software ahead of production.

The R2 is expected to be Rivian’s most affordable SUV yet, but judging by these images, it’s still packing plenty of trail capability.
