Rivian Confirms Leasing Will Be Available When R2 Launches

Rivian has confirmed that leasing will be available right from the start when R2 deliveries begin later this year, and that’s great news for anyone looking for a more flexible way to get into the lineup.
RivianTrackr was able to confirm this directly with Rivian at yesterday’s media event during the full R2 lineup reveal at SXSW 2026. For those keeping score, we previously speculated that leasing might not make it to R2 at launch, so we’re happy to be wrong on this one.
This is a bigger deal than it sounds. Leasing has always been a smart move in the EV world, but it’s especially relevant with R2. The tech in these vehicles is moving fast, and R2 is showing up with hardware like LiDAR next year and that positions it for some serious capability growth over the next few years. A lease lets you enjoy the vehicle now without locking yourself into hardware that could look very different a generation from now.
Between the lease option, the pricing Rivian has laid out, and everything packed into R2, getting into a Rivian just got a whole lot easier. We’ll be watching for lease terms and details as we get closer to deliveries.

Thank you for posting a separate article confirming these details!!
At least they thought about this ahead of time.
I am so happy to hear this news. I have an hr 25 reservation and I was hoping I could lease when I made the reservation. I was fully ready to purchase the car, but I’d much rather lease to stay up to date
This makes sense to me. Leasing at launch gets the brand into so many more homes who prefer to go that route. Can’t wait to get mine
Any word on if they plan to expand leasing to any new states?
We should probably look into why they don’t lease in those states — I imagine it has nothing to do with Rivian in most cases.
As a Nebraska resident, I can lease a Rivian direct but I cannot buy a preowned car direct from Rivian.
However, I can buy new or used direct from Tesla, but I cannot lease a Tesla.
Make sense of those ridiculous dealer restrictions in Nebraska for me :/
I’ll be happy lease a launch R2 the moment my place in line comes up as a day 1 reservation holder (non-owner).
I placed a deposit for R2 on day 1, so I should be able to take delivery pretty early after release. However, based on previous experience, and with the knowledge that more tech will be available in about a year, I will probably sit on the sidelines. The availability of a lease option does make an early acquisition a bit more interesting.
I am interested in a lease in August when my Jeep Exe lease comes to terms.
