Rivian is sending save the dates to community members and influencers for its second Autonomy & AI Day, happening December 9 in San Francisco, and I’m expecting this to be where we see the full version of point to point for the first time.
It’s worth looking back at last year’s event at Rivian’s Palo Alto offices, since a lot of what was promised on that stage has made its way into our vehicles since. Rivian revealed RAP1, its first in-house 5nm processor, along with the Gen 3 Autonomy Computer slated to debut on R2 at the end of this year, and confirmed R2 would launch without LiDAR and add it later in the program.
Current owners got plenty out of it too. Universal Hands Free was confirmed for Gen 2 R1 across more than 3.5 million miles of roads in the US and Canada, and Autonomy+ was priced at $2,500 one time or $49.99 a month.
Rivian also laid out its roadmap that day, moving from hands free to point to point, then eyes off, and eventually personal Level 4.
Point to point is the next step, and Rivian has already committed to a limited rollout later this year with a broad rollout to owners in 2027. You enter an address and your Rivian drives the route through city streets, intersections and highway interchanges while you supervise, which puts it squarely up against Tesla’s FSD Supervised.
A San Francisco stage feels like the right place for Rivian to show that off, especially with Tesla’s FSD being the benchmark everyone compares against.
