Production-Intent Rivian R2 Debuts in NYC with New Color and Updated Charge Port

RJ Scaringe has unveiled a production-intent prototype of the upcoming R2 in New York City, showcasing notable design updates and enhancements. The vehicle, presented in a new silver color reminiscent of LA Silver but slightly darker, features a relocated charging port now positioned at the driver’s side rear, a change aimed at improving compatibility with Tesla’s Supercharger network.

This adjustment addresses previous concerns regarding the R2’s charging port placement, which was initially on the passenger side to accommodate curbside charging prevalent in European markets. By moving the port to the driver’s side rear, Rivian enhances usability for North American drivers, particularly those utilizing Tesla’s Superchargers, which are optimized for left-rear charging ports.

For those in the New York City area, the R2 will be on display at Rivian’s NYC Space on from June 3-7, providing an opportunity to experience the latest developments firsthand.

    • 😂 no it’s not. How is blocking traffic in parking lots and streets while you back in, safer?

      • Backing in to an empty parking space is safer than backing out into the active travel lane of a parking lot. Always.

  1. Putting the charting port on front passenger side would allow me to pull forward into Tesla chargers and also pull up for curbside charging.

  2. New Jersey turnpike just removed all Tesla superchargers from their service plazas. Replaced with universal chargers that can do both CCS and NACS.

  3. I currently have a R1S; keeping the port on the driver’s side is ideal for me charging at home. We charge at home, so Tesla charging compatibility doesn’t matter to much.

  4. R2 is perfect. If they are keeping the new color and charge port, I’ll place my order as soon as it is confirmed.
