New Rivian Autonomy FeaturesGen 2 Only

We're excited to introduce the following new driver assistance features to further enhance your vehicle experience.

Universal Hands-FreeGen 2 Only

Universal Hands-Free steers, accelerates, and brakes your vehicle on roads with marked lanes, allowing you to let go of the steering wheel for extended periods, as long as you're looking at the road. Universal Hands-Free is now available on more than 3.5 million miles (5.6 million km) of roads in North America and relies on Driver Attention Detection to confirm that you're paying attention to the road ahead of you.

When Universal Hands-Free is available on a marked road as indicated by the Universal Hands-Free icon near the speedometer, pull the drive stalk towards you twice to activate Universal Hands-Free.

System Limitations

  • Universal Hands-Free is an advanced driver assistance feature designed to support the driver, but doesn't replace the driver's attention, judgement, and need to control the vehicle.
  • Universal Hands-Free doesn't make your vehicle autonomous or self-driving. Stay alert at all times of road conditions. Always be prepared to take control of the vehicle if needed.
  • Universal Hands-Free doesn't automatically stop at traffic lights and stop signs. Notifications may appear, and you must take the appropriate action in these scenarios. It is your responsibility to follow traffic laws.
  • Universal Hands-Free doesn't update the set speed automatically as the speed limits change. It is your responsibility to monitor the posted speed limits and adjust the set speed.
  • Universal Hands-Free doesn't make turns or follow navigation instructions. If you're in a turn-only lane, you must take control of the vehicle and steer it appropriately.
  • Don't use Universal Hands-Free on slippery, unpaved, wet, or snowy roads.

Universal Hands-Free won't do the following:

  • Drive the vehicle through high curvature roads such as roundabouts and sharp turns.
  • Detect special-use lanes such as bike lands, bus lanes, and emergency lanes.
  • Detect and react to oncoming or crossing vehicles, uncommon objets, or odd-shaped objects including, but not limited to, open doors, barrels, poles, debris, and trailers.
  • React promptly to road users around blind corners, crossing intersections, and narrow driving situations.
  • Slow down or stop for speed bumps, dips, upcoming traffic lights, or stop signs.
  • Steer in response to temporary lane lines marked by cones, barrels, or similar construction materials.
  • React to special crossing scenarios such as railway crossings.
  • Follow navigation prompts or make turns in turn lanes.

For more information and important warnings, go to the Owner's Guide on the center display and search for Universal Hands-Free.

Autonomy Drive StylesGen 2 Only

Autonomy Drive Styles allow you to customize the driving behavior of our driver assistance systems and features: Universal Hands-Free, Highway Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Change on Command.

  • Choose Mild for a relaxed style with more gap distance and more gradual lane changes.
  • Choose Medium for a balanced style to manage cut-ins and accelerate with traffic flow.
  • Choose Spicy for a more dynamic style with tighter gap distance and quicker steering during lane changes.

To change Drive Styles while you drive, press the thumb control buttons on the right side of the steering wheel.

Updated Control to Adjust SpeedGen 2 Only

To adjust speed while in Universal Hands-Free, Highway Assist, or Adaptive Cruise Control, roll the right thumbwheel up or down on the steering wheel.

Enhanced Autonomy ViewGen 2 Only

The Autonomy View now zooms out to show more of the area behind your vehicle, so you have more context for maneuvers such as Lange changes and turns.

NOTE

Your vehicle is equipped with only advanced driver assistance features. These driver assistance features are designed to support the driver, but do not replace the driver's attention, judgment, and need to control the vehicle.

Keep Stability on in most driving conditions. Electronic Stability Control optimizes vehicle traction and provides anti-skid support. Turning off Stability disables Electronic Stability Control.

      • RAD = Rivian Adventure Department

I think Andrew meant “RAD Tuner”.

And it seems that the RAD Tuner section that was originally listed twice has been replaced by a section on the Kick Turn. I guess this is good but it caused me a couple days of sadness before it was fixed.

  1. Jose, Considering the ongoing software improvements, can you provide any insight into the likelihood or timeline of a text message feature update being released for Gen-1 Rivian vehicles? Thanks.

  2. Though there would be Gemini AI this release. Guess it is a ‘26 scheduled event

  3. I wasn’t clear on the turn-by-turn (point to point) update that’ll run $2K. Is this option only going to be available post R2 production (Gen 3) or will Gen 2 owners have this option with current build?

  4. Any technical or physical reason why Gen 1 cannot do a kick turn? We’ve all seen the video of tank turn on a Gen 1. As an owner of a Quad 2022 Gen 1 with ~5,000 VIN, I’d really like to see the vehicle at least do kick turn. It will be six years in January since my deposit was placed!

  5. Finally alternative routes in navigation. I will always choose to drive less miles. Do care if it’s couple minutes longer.

  6. The update rollout is slow as the lvl 2 fix for cold weather is important to many of us who have Rivian home chargers and live in the cold. Can’t rely on the availability of lvl3. I asked Rivian if they could push this to my vehicle and they said no. Need it for a trip in a day.

  7. Wow… The amount of stuff coming for Gen 2 is staggering for Gen 1. Feels like our updates are already done. Not even getting general hands free on all roads is a huge miss considering most cars like Subaru’s etc can do it have have been able to for 5+ years.

  8. Gen2 R1T. The Lane Change on Command setting will not stay set in Settings following the upgrade. Switches off immediately. Tried rebooting but doesn’t fix it. Anyone else?

  9. Kick turn / tank turn on Gen 1 quad will not happen. Tosh did the interview with RJ and gave him hell for it but the response is just stunningly tone deaf. Listen around 25 minute mark onwards. https://youtu.be/JYMAbCmrBhs

It’s a feature that would be extremely useful on tight trail turns that traverse steep terrain- like many historic mining shelf trails. But I expect Rivian has made the calculus that they’ll loose many disgruntled gen 1 quad owners future sales and that they don’t care because they are banking on their R2 mass market platform – not the loyalty of Gen 1 quad owners and keeping their business.

  10. Is anyone rlse having issues with tesla super chargers with gen 1 vehicles? Im charging at 4-8 kw with the rivian adapter.
