What Are Rivian’s Standard+ and Large+ Batteries and How to Check Yours

If you’ve been confused about Rivian’s Standard+ and Large+ battery options, you’re not alone. These battery trims were quietly offered for a short period, and Rivian never specifically called them out in the R1 Shop. Instead, buyers had to rely on range estimates and specs to figure out what they were actually getting.
Here’s the deal—both Standard+ and Large+ are just software-locked versions of larger battery packs. The Standard+ is actually a Large pack with some capacity locked away, while the Large+ is really a Max pack with limits in place. This means Rivian built these trucks with bigger batteries but restricted their usable capacity. The Large+ was introduced as a workaround due to delays with the new Gen 2 Large battery, while the Standard+ was added as an additional price point for buyers for Gen 1.
The good news? Rivian recently confirmed that paid unlocks for these batteries are coming later this year, meaning owners will soon be able to pay to access the full capacity of their packs.
So how do you know if you have a Standard+ or Large+ battery? The only way to check is through your truck’s center screen. Go to Settings > About, and you’ll see your battery type listed there. If it says Standard+ or Large+, that means you’ve got a software-locked pack.
For now, Rivian hasn’t shared pricing or details on how the unlocks will work, but it’s something to keep an eye on.
