Rivian’s New R1S Large+ Variant is a Max Pack in Disguise

As reported on X earlier today, Rivian is now selling Generation 2 Rivian R1S Large variant vehicles on the R1 Shop but with one caveat… it’s a Max pack that is software locked.

Rivian has introduced a new battery variant called “Large+” although you won’t see that label anywhere on Rivian.com if you try to search for it. This battery is a Max pack that is being software limited to mimic a Large pack. The reason for doing this? Unknown at this time.

This all begs the question as to whether Rivian will offer a software update in the future for Large+ owners to upgrade to the Max pack. As soon as I know any details, I’ll share them with you.

Existing Gen 2 R1S Dual Large owners will be contacted by Rivian soon so they can take delivery of their new Large+ variant at no additional cost.

As of the writing of this article, the Rivian R1 Shop filter doesn’t seem to work for R1S Large but you can check it out by going directly to this page.
