Rivian R2’s New Battery Tech Will Be Built in the U.S. Starting in 2027

Rivian’s latest shareholder letter gave us a closer look at the R2’s new battery tech. The R2 uses a totally new battery pack built around Rivian’s 4695 cell, which packs six times more energy than the 2170 cells in today’s R1 vehicles. The pack uses the R2’s floor as the lid, helping cut weight and boost efficiency.

Even better, Rivian says all R2 battery cells will be made in the U.S. starting in 2027. That’s a big move for cost control, supply stability, and keeping things local.

The R2 also introduces Rivian’s new Energy Management Control Module, which combines several systems into one compact unit. The coolest part? A bidirectional charger that can send power both ways, charging the truck from the grid or sending power from the truck back to your home.
