Rivian Quietly Staffing R2 Night Shift Just Days After Production Start

There’s now a small but real signal that Rivian is actively staffing the second shift for R2 production at Normal, only about a week after volume saleable production officially started on April 22.
The signal comes from Kyle Kindred, a Rivian employee of more than two years, who posted on LinkedIn that he’s stepped into a new role as an R2 Group Leader (congrats by the way). The line that matters comes near the end of the post, where he says he’s looking forward to building on his validation experience as the team ramps production on night shift. That’s the first employee-level hint that the second shift is already getting leadership in place behind the scenes.
For context, Rivian has said since the R2 reveal in 2024 that the Normal plant would start R2 on a single shift, add a second later in 2026, and bring on a third in 2027. That’s the full plan for getting the facility to its 215,000 unit annual capacity, with up to 155,000 of those being R2.
What this means for reservation holders is that the cadence Rivian has been telegraphing actually seems to be tracking. Demo drives at Spaces are penciled in for around June/July Reservation invites are supposed to start going out next month. The Block Party tour is already on the road. None of that really matters if Normal stays stuck on one shift, because a single shift just doesn’t push the volume needed to work meaningfully down a long reservation list. The second shift is what changes the math.
The timing also makes today’s Q1 2026 earnings call more interesting. Second shift staffing is one of the more obvious topics that’s going to come up. If RJ confirms it on the call, that lines up with Kindred’s post almost too neatly.
We’ll probably learn a lot more on the call later today, but it’s also possible we just keep finding things out the way we found this one out, scrolling LinkedIn.

love it all!
