Rivian Confirms Launch Mode and Apple Watch Support Coming to Gen 1 Vehicles Early Next Year

Update: Also confirmed that Launch Mode will come to Gen 2 Dual Performance vehicles.

Wassym just shared a quick but pretty meaningful update on Reddit, and there’s some good news for Gen 1 owners.

Launch Mode is officially coming to Gen 1 Quad and Dual Performance vehicles early next year. That’s a nice performance win for owners who thought some of these newer tricks might stay locked to Gen 2.

He also confirmed that messaging support will roll out through the AI Assistant with deep, end-to-end integration.

And as a nice bonus, Gen 1 vehicles are getting Apple Watch support early next year as well. This will be active entry only, so no passive unlock like the UWB-enabled Gen 2 vehicles, but still a very welcome quality-of-life upgrade for longtime owners.

  1. Really hope the messaging comes to fruition. Been a long wait. Can live without CarPlay with actual messaging. Happy my watch will be able to unlock. Not too concerned about the autonomous driving

    • This is fantastic news for us Gen 1 owners. That said, I certainly hope that Apple Watch support also includes active entry for Pixel/Samsung Watch owners. Even if there are restrictions to certain generations (i.e. Pixel Watch 4).

  2. Why cant seat belt notification be issued on Gen 1s? I see a wire running from the seat belt buckle but no notification? Why is that a Gen2 only thing

  3. Launch mode for Dual performance! Awesome :)!! I was hoping they would do that at some point.

  4. This is a chance for Rivian to remember their original fans and customers. Hopefully since the “Wet Handshake” Reddit post and your articles about Gen 1 issues, Rivian will pay attention and take care of all of their customers.

  5. Any chance that a weather map overlay will ever be possible? It would be really nice to be able to track snow, hail, and thunderstorms while driving.

  6. How many times does one need to go sub 3 sec? Launch mode is a toy. It eats tires.

Gen 1s are being frozen out of the AI driving features, a much more useful addition. Leaving us Gen 1 owners with essentially obsolete technology . Thanks Rivian…for nothing.

    • You knew this when purchasing, as we all did. Although I feel like you aren’t really an owner anyway.

  7. How many times does one need to go sub 3 sec? Launch mode is a toy. It eats tires.

    . Thanks Rivian…for nothing.

  8. Glad to see some Gen 1 love. Apple Watch would be great.

Launch mode is not important to me but seems there are a lot of people who like it. No idea why.

I do think it’s the autonomy and lane centering I would expect on gen 1 based on the tech and promises.

  9. What about bidirectional charging !! They talked about it 3 years ago but never brought it to life.

    • Sigenergy demo’ed a BiDi product that works with Rivian (NACS and CCS) and multiple other EVs.

I think it is part of their whole home battery system & home DC fast charge (25kW) system so it doesn’t look inexpensive.
