Didn’t spot your state? Rivian says more states are coming, so they haven’t forgotten about you.
If you’re new to Rivian Care, here’s the deal. It’s an optional protection plan (handled by Assurant) to keep your Rivian safe after the factory warranty is up. Right now, it covers the R1T, R1S, R2, and Rivian Pre-owned vehicles in the states on that big list above.
Here’s how it works: you apply, then get a quote. Pro tip: it’s cheaper if you sign up while your original warranty is still ticking. Wait until the last minute and you’ll pay more.
You get two coverage choices. Grab one or grab both. The Vehicle Service Contract is the heavy hitter. It covers the big stuff like the battery, drivetrain, important mechanicals, and safety tech after the main warranty ends. Plus, it throws in some wear-and-tear coverage from day one. The other plan, Preferred Vehicle Protection, is for the little headaches: windshield chips, wheel dings, and dent fixes.
So, is it worth it? Honestly, it depends on how long you’re planning to hang on to your Rivian. Repair prices are a wild card, especially for batteries and drivetrains. Some folks love the peace of mind. Others might skip it and roll the dice. Either way, you do you.
The main thing? Way more people can actually get Rivian Care now. If your state just got added, you finally get to decide for yourself instead of getting turned away. And if you’re still waiting, it sounds like your turn’s coming soon.
Jose Castillo is the founder of RivianTrackr and has owned and driven Rivians since early in the brand's consumer history. He currently drives an R1S and an R2 in Florida and uses Universal Hands-Free every day. As a credentialed Rivian journalist, he has covered the R2 First Drive in Park City and SXSW firsthand and has spoken directly with Rivian's software and autonomy leadership.
Dumb question but what happens if you get it in a state where it is offered, but then move to a state where it is not? Thanks!
Not dumb at all, buying it in a covered state and then moving to one that doesn’t have Rivian Care yet should not kill your coverage. The state restriction is on where you can originate the contract, not where you can keep it in force. Once the contract exists, it is tied to the vehicle, not your zip code.
California, Washington and Florida are some big markets… Andale!
I’m considering Xcare since Rivian’s is not available yet. Would be good to get an article on Xcare experiences and coverage examples, since they appear to be the only other major Rivian extended warranty.
I’m in NY, still says only available in Texas on my account. Is it only available if I bought new from Rivian?
Everything is being updated in real-time so there’s a good chance your account hasn’t been updated but it should be available for you.
Odd it’s available in states with I’m guessing extremely low Rivian/EV adoption.. Wyoming, Alaska.. and not available in some of their biggest markets.
Maybe it’s an effort to assure residents of those states that they are safe buying for the long-term?
What I’m wondering is what are the rates?
I’m curious, how do you sign up? There’s nowhere on the link that shows that.
Any indication of states where Rivian Care is coming to next?
Just a big fail that Rivian did not have this available for everyone before any warranties expired, and I assume too late for many as well. Glad I have XCare.
how about Canada ?
Jose – On this page, https://rivian.com/support/article/rivian-care, it lists all the states you’ve stated. Then when you go into your account, select your vehicle, scroll down to Rivian Care, you come to a page that has a link to an interest form that no one responds to. Also, that same page has three FAQs – one of them is “Where is Rivian Care offered?” And the answer is “ Rivian Care is in its pilot phase, currently offered to a select group of customers in Texas.” Any thoughts why this is buried deep in your account in an “Interest Form” link that’s easy to miss with outdated info on the page telling you about the program? They don’t seem very committed to selling this.
