Rivian Autonomy Platform+ Won’t Be Free Much Longer

We’re nearing the end of “early 2025,” which means the days of getting Rivian Autonomy Platform+ for free may be numbered. Rivian has stated on both their website and official channels that Platform+ will remain complimentary for Gen 2 vehicles through early 2025. But with April right around the corner, the free ride could be coming to a close very soon.

As of now, Rivian Autonomy Platform+ includes:

  • Lane Change on Command – Signal and the vehicle finds the right moment to change lanes.
  • Enhanced Highway Assist – From on-ramp to off-ramp, drive longer with smarter detection and hands-free support on select mapped highways.

Also on the roadmap is Driving Comfort Assist, which promises to adjust your lane position and speed intelligently based on surrounding traffic. That’s expected to launch later this year.

The standard (free) Rivian Autonomy Platform still offers a robust suite of features: highway assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warnings, and more. You’re not getting a barebones experience by skipping Platform+, but there’s definitely an added layer of convenience and polish with the upgrade.

What we still don’t know is how much Platform+ will cost once the free period ends. Will Rivian go the subscription route? Will it be a one-time fee? Can Rivian Rewards be applied to offset the cost?

What’s included with Rivian Autonomy Platform+ as of March 2025.

To add some context, Tesla currently charges $99/month for Full Self Driving (Supervised), which offers much deeper autonomy—turns, stops, traffic light handling, and more. But let’s be honest: comparing Tesla’s Autopilot/FSD stack to Rivian’s is apples to oranges. Tesla has a massive head start, and it shows.

So what would make sense for Rivian? $20/month? $2,000 one-time? Something in between? Nobody outside Rivian seems to know yet. But if they do plan to charge for Platform+ soon, we should be getting details imminently.

Performance Upgrade One-time Purchase Option
Many owners wish Rivian offered a monthly option for the Performance Upgrade…

And hopefully, just maybe, Rivian will let owners burn through some of those hard-earned Rivian Rewards points to soften the blow. We’ll be watching closely and will update as soon as pricing details emerge.

Considering how flaky Highway Assist is–I don’t think I’ve ever got it to engage for longer than 5 mins at a time–and the fact that they’ve only JUST pushed the hands-free version of it a couple of weeks ago, it hardly feels defensible for them to be charging YET ANOTHER subscription for these capabilities.

Has anybody gotten lane change on command to work reliably? Every single time I’ve tried to use it, it ends up taking 5-10s, with maybe a 40-50% failure rate… which is way way slower than if I were to just manually do the lane change myself.

Given that they’re collecting our data to train/finetune the models, and the fact that the existing featureset is nowhere near the reliability & polish of what one would expect for a prod-quality product, the very lease they could do is give owners more time before trying to nickel & dime us on an $80k product. Would also be great if they provided these capabilities for free to owners who are leasing–that’s already a subscription, basically, and the gross net-revenue from those amortized on an annual basis is higher anyways.
