Rivian Autonomy & AI Day Breakdown: What R1 and R2 Vehicles Get and When

Rivian dropped a ton of autonomy and AI news, so here’s the simplified version of what matters and how it breaks down by vehicle.
R2 launches in early 2026 using the same Gen 2 Autonomy Computer found in today’s Gen 2 R1T and R1S. The new Rivian Autonomy Processor and Gen 3 Autonomy Computer do not arrive until late 2026, so early R2 builds will not have the next-gen hardware right away.
LiDAR follows the same timeline. R2 will launch without LiDAR in early 2026, with LiDAR being added later in 2026 as part of Rivian’s more advanced autonomy stack.

Autonomy+ is coming to Gen 2 R1T, Gen 2 R1S, and R2. Pricing is $2,500 one-time or $49.99 per month. It includes Universal Hands-Free driving, which launches for Gen 2 R1 vehicles in December 2025 and is available on R2 at launch. Lane Change on Command is included, while Auto Parking and On-Ramp to Off-Ramp driving are both coming in 2026.
Rivian Assistant is also confirmed for Gen 1 R1 vehicles, Gen 2 R1 vehicles, and R2. That rollout is planned for 2026, bringing Rivian’s AI assistant across the entire lineup.
The big takeaway is timing. R2 is designed to improve over time, not peak at launch. Gen 2 R1 owners get early access to hands-free driving, while late 2026 is when R2 really levels up with new compute hardware and LiDAR.

What wasn’t clear was… are they planning on bringing personal L4 to gen2, launch R2 and LiDAR enabled R2, or does personal L4 require LiDAR which will limit what vehicles have that access.
They weren’t clear.. but I would say with almost certainty L4 is going to require LiDAR.
The other item that was not clear, is the $2500 one-time. Is the one-time for the car so its transferred if you sell it or can it be transferred to a future Rivian you purchase.
I also thought they would be announcing something new for the 2025-46 update since there was no real update in November. Is there any word on what and when 2025-46 is other than the key and customizable display?
Stays with the car not the person. You sell, stays with the car.
I believe that the RAD Tuner was to be included in the Dec release, but as of yet there has been no word on that.
I find it extremely hard to believe they will launch R2 in the first half of 2026 and then update it with a new hardware set less than six months later. One of two things will likely happen: R2 initial launch will be delayed until second half of 2026 to align with Gen3 hardware availability OR R2 will launch as scheduled and Gen3 won’t arrive until 2027 at the earliest.
This is an excellent point. So the resi holders will get a nerfed version of the R2 but if I wait until end of the year, I’ll get the latest and greatest hardware stack?
Does not seem likely they’ll treat the resi holders like that.
I’m assuming they would have announced the R2 Gen 2->Gen 3 pipeline more explicitly if they were going to launch with Gen 2. Given that, likely that R2 launch was pushed to late 2026 with how they mentioned Gen 3 R2 in late 2026.
The Wall Street stock analysts are all banking on the R2 launch, and they will tank everything if that doesn’t happen. So even if it doesn’t initially have lidar and all the goodies, the base $45K vehicle has to hit the market.
Then, the lidar-equipped Autonomy+ poster truck can hit the ground at $60k.
What I want to know that hasn’t been said is: will there be a lidar-equipped, Gen 3 Autonomy+ R1T? OR an R2T?
It would be nice if 2025-46 came with expanded Autonomy+, RAD tuner, Kick-turn and something Christmas costume related. Nice close-out to ’25. Sets up a nice ’26.
Also, if the R2 launches in early’26 with a 2-motor premium package, will that be a premium package minus Lidar or will they launch without the hardware but install it in late ’26 as an upgrade/Service visit?
Can you share a table view of the features, the model(s) they’ll be available on, and the expected date of availability?
Thanks Jose, nice clear post.
For the “coming in 2026,” such as the voice assistant and Auto Parking, do you have any best guesses as to when? Maybe not something confirmed, therefore you couldn’t post above, but could take a guess here?
I hope the voice assistant is sooner than later, my wife is still complaining about text messaging on our gen1 quad.
Plus text messaging was on this years list to deliver!
My guess—trying to read between the lines from the event yesterday—is the voice assistant comes in the next 2-3 months, and the auto parking / On-Ramp to Off-Ramp is much later in the year…
I will say.. Rivian announced everything I expected they would, but they announced it 6-12 months too early. I think they should have kept the Gen 3 hardware and lidar under wraps until they are closer to delivering it.
Why would anyone buy a R1 today, knowing that Gen 3 is around the corner, why would you want an early R2 ? Even if you’re like me and don’t care about self driving, there’s a perceived the value in having the features even if you don’t use them. I would have announced everything that is coming to vehicles on the road and what you can buy the next 12 months. This was for the investors.
The general buyer looking for a Rivian should buy a Gen 1 R1 and comma AI .. You save a ton (20-50k) and get most of these features.
Does this mean that R2 will launch with the AXM2 that the R1 gen2 uses, or the previously trailed hardware (ie the one with ‘2.4x the AI compute’ and ‘next gen infotainment’ from the investor deck?
