Recent social media buzz has spread some misinformation regarding Rivian R1 owners entering a 3-year lease and the possibility of exiting early to switch to an R2 upon its 2026 release. To address this, Rivian has provided clarification on the matter.
As of the writing of this article, Rivian does not have any plans to offer a way for Rivian owners to exit a 3-year R1 lease early once the R2 is released. Of course, it should be noted that anything is subject.
Rivian also wanted to clarify how current Rivian owners can get an R2 sooner.
Rivian will offer you priority access to configure a Rivian R2 vehicle and to delivery appointments for your R2 purchase or lease. The timing of such priority access will be determined by Rivian at its sole discretion once R2 vehicles are generally made available to the public for purchase in your area.

To qualify for this you must meet the following criteria:
- Place an R2 reservation, then purchase/lease that R2
- Have currently or previously owned/leased an R1
This offer is about gaining priority to the R2 and not terminating an existing R1 lease.
Vehicle lease agreements are contracts and once a contract is written and signed, it can be very hard to exit said contract/lease unless you pay the remaining lease off or purchase the vehicle.
