Rivian’s 2026.41 update will stop Gen 2 R1 and R2 vehicles from collecting outside camera images anywhere near the places you’ve saved in Navigation, replacing the three-minute timer it uses today. Rivian shared the change in an email to owners.
If Exterior Cameras Data Sharing is turned on in your Data and Privacy settings, your Rivian sends images from its outside cameras back to Rivian, which uses them to improve features like Universal Hands-Free and Automatic Emergency Braking. Rivian says those images aren’t tied to your account, name, email, or VIN, and its support page notes this only applies to model year 2025 and newer vehicles, so Gen 1 owners aren’t affected.
Right now, the car skips collecting images for the first and last three minutes of any drive that starts or ends at a saved location like Home or Work.
With 2026.41, collection is blocked any time you’re near one of those saved spots, no matter how long you’re there. So if you spend ten minutes looking for parking near your kid’s school, none of that gets captured, where before the timer could run out while you were still circling. Once you drive away from the area, collection picks back up.
It also makes your saved locations list matter more, so it’s worth adding places like your pharmacy or the vet in Navigation. 2026.36 made that easier by letting you name and reorder Favorites.
If you’d rather not share images at all, you can turn it off under Settings, then Data and Privacy, then Exterior Cameras Data Sharing.
