In an exciting announcement during a Q&A session this morning, Rivian’s Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid confirmed that Google Casting will be introduced in the 2024.47 software update. This highly anticipated feature, initially revealed earlier this year, is a significant step in Rivian’s continued efforts to enhance in-vehicle technology.

Google Casting allows seamless integration of Google’s ecosystem with Rivian’s vehicles, enabling features such as mirroring Android device content directly to the vehicle’s display. This functionality is expected to appeal to users looking for better connectivity options and streamlined access to apps and media while on the road.

Expected Release Timeline

If Rivian’s typical software update cadence holds, the 2024.47 update should roll out in December 2024. The announcement further underscores Rivian’s commitment to delivering innovative features in its regular software updates, building on the capabilities already available in its vehicles.

What to Expect from Google Casting

Although specific details of Rivian’s implementation were not disclosed during the Q&A, Google Casting generally allows users to:

  • Stream apps like YouTube or Spotify from their phone to the vehicle’s center display.
  • Share navigation instructions or routes from Google Maps.
  • Enjoy a seamless connection between their phone and vehicle, reducing the need for additional cables or third-party apps.

What’s Next?

Rivian owners will be excited about the December release of 2024.47 and its Google Casting feature. As we get closer to the rollout, Rivian may share more details on how the feature will be integrated into the user interface and any potential limitations or requirements.

  1. Some day the even longer ago announced Sirius XM integration will re surface… I’ve opted to hot spot from my phone this far instead of pay for connect +. Not sure why I would need connect plus to use this aside from playing fire it’s development and… Maintenance?

  2. Google casting allows for any video source from an android device to be mirrored into the screen. Anything from YouTube, Netflix to video games. iOS devices can do the same thing but on a more limited basis since the app needs to implement support for it.
