First Video of the Rivian R2 Rear Wiper in Action

A friend of the site sent over a video showing the R2’s rear wiper in action on a production unit, and it’s the clearest look we’ve gotten so far at how Rivian’s answer to the rear window problem actually plays out in the real world.
For anyone who hasn’t been deep in the R2 weeds, the rear wiper has been one of those small details people kept circling back to. The R2 has that roll-down rear tailgate window, which is a great feature on its own, but it also meant Rivian had to figure out where to put a wiper without ruining the look or interfering with the window itself. Their solution was to tuck it into a pocket that hides the wiper when it’s not in use, then swing it out when you actually need it.
In the video you can see exactly that. The wiper sweeps across the glass like any other rear wiper, with washer fluid coming out of a nozzle just below the third brake light. Nothing dramatic, nothing weird, just a wiper doing wiper things. Which is honestly the best possible outcome for a feature that got way more attention than it probably deserved.
That said, the concern people keep bringing up is the pocket itself. Snow, mud, sand, road grime, leaves, whatever your local environment likes to throw at a vehicle. Could the pocket trap stuff and cause issues over time? Rivian has said the design accounts for that and it shouldn’t be an issue, but I don’t think anyone is going to fully relax about it until R2 owners start putting miles on these things in real winter conditions and on actual trails. That’s the only test that matters here, and it’s still months away from happening at any meaningful scale.
The funniest part of this whole thing has been watching everyone become a rear wiper expert overnight. Threads, videos, takes, debates about a part of the car most people never think about on any other vehicle they own. I don’t really know what to make of that other than the R2 is just operating on a different level of attention right now and even the smallest details get picked apart.
We’ll see how the pocket holds up once R2s start landing in driveways and people are using them through actual winters and actual mud. Until then, the wiper works, the nozzle works, and that’s more than we knew yesterday.

I watched the video more times than I want to admit, I honestly didn’t know this was so contentious. Reminds me of the Cybertruck wiper fiasco.
I’ve seen front wipers that slot in and are hidden. This is no different.
Living here in Colorado, I have a few thoughts on this. Most new and redesigned vehicles come with their share of quirks. The redesigned 1968 Corvette is a classic example it had a panel that ran across the front cowl which had to open before the wipers would deploy. A clean design concept, even if the execution left something to be desired.
That said, I recently spotted a production R2 navigating the Colorado Rockies with an Illinois manufacturer plate, and I have to say it’s a stunning EV. I truly hope it gives Rivian the boost it needs to go from merely surviving to genuinely thriving.
