The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department (AFRD) is introducing Rivian vehicles as its first EV response vehicles. These trucks will be used citywide to handle the city’s high volume of medical emergencies more efficiently, especially in heavy traffic.
A Solution for Busy Streets
EMS calls make up 63% of AFRD’s workload, with over 14,000 calls between July and September. The compact and agile Rivian trucks are designed to navigate crowded city streets faster than traditional fire trucks, helping AFRD reach emergencies quickly. Staffed by paramedics, these EVs will focus on areas with the most medical calls each week.
Green Innovation
The Rivians were funded by the $3 million “Fleet Forward” campaign, part of the city’s push to modernize its fleet and reduce emissions. Charging stations at fire stations will keep the trucks ready to serve. An EV fire engine is also expected to join the fleet in early 2025.
Leading the Way
Fire Chief Rod Smith said the Rivians represent the department’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, ensuring the community gets fast, reliable emergency service. This move also highlights Rivian’s growing role in public service, proving its EVs can adapt to urban and emergency needs.
