Captain’s chairs, Esker Silver, and a reshuffled lineup for the 2027 R1

Rivian has officially introduced the 2027 model year R1T and R1S. The R1S can be ordered with second row captain’s chairs for the first time, Esker Silver replaces LA Silver as the no cost paint color on both vehicles, and the R1T gains a 20-inch Adventure All-Season wheel and tire package as standard equipment.

Underneath those, the lineup itself has been reorganized. The R1 trim names move away from motor count and adopt the structure already used on R2. Dual becomes Premium, Tri becomes Performance, and Quad keeps its name at the top of the lineup. Base pricing holds, with the R1T starting at $79,990 and the R1S starting at $83,990

Ordering opens today, and deliveries begin at the same time.

Rivian frames the trim change as a shift in what the buyer is being asked at the top of the order flow. The company describes it as moving from “how many motors” to “how does this vehicle fit my lifestyle,” and someone cross-shopping an R2 and an R1S now reads the same three trim names on both pages.

What each trim replaces

Premium takes over from Dual and corresponds to what was sold as Dual Large, rated at up to 329 miles on both the R1S and the R1T. That figure comes from the 22-inch Range and 22-inch Sport Dark wheels on either body style, and from the 22-inch Sport Bright on the R1S. A Long Range option sits above it within the same trim and lines up with the old Dual Max, carrying an EPA estimated range of up to 410 miles on the R1S and up to 420 miles on the R1T.

Performance replaces Tri and is rated at up to 371 miles on both body styles. Quad carries over unchanged in name, remains the halo configuration, and is rated at up to 374 miles on both the R1T and the R1S.

Interior names follow R2 as well

The interior lineup has been renamed on the same logic. The wood trim has been dropped out of the name, and a Signature label now sits on the upper interiors.

Black Mountain with Dark Ash Wood is now simply Black Mountain, and it remains the standard interior on R1T and R1S Premium. It can also be paired with the Sound and Vision package for $2,500, which continues to bundle the Dynamic Glass Roof and Rivian Premium Audio. Ocean Coast with Dark Ash Wood becomes Ocean Coast and is only offered on Premium in combination with Sound and Vision, at $4,500. Higher in the lineup the package is standard at no additional cost on Performance and Quad in both body styles, which carries over the arrangement from the 2026 Tri and Quad.

Above those, Black Mountain with Brown Ash Wood becomes Black Mountain Signature and is the standard interior on R1T Performance and R1T Quad. Slate Sky with Walnut becomes Slate Sky Signature and is a $3,000 option on those same two R1T trims. Ocean Coast with Driftwood becomes Ocean Coast Signature, and it does not carry over to the R1T for the 2027 model year.

On R1S Performance and Quad, Black Mountain Signature is the standard interior, and the other two Signature interiors are tied to the captain’s chairs configuration covered below. R1S Premium and Premium Long Range stay with the two Premium interiors.

Captain’s chairs arrive on the R1S

Rivian says second row captain’s chairs have been the most requested interior feature to date. The R1S has been sold only with a second row bench since it launched, and that bench stays in the lineup.

Each chair carries an individual armrest that stows flush into the seat when it is not in use, along with a push to release cup holder that folds down. The chairs are heated, they fold flat, and they retain full car seat tie downs. The feature set is identical on every trim that offers them.

Rivian calls the gap between the two chairs a Gear-Friendly Pass Through, which allows long gear to run straight through the center of the cabin while all six passengers stay seated.

Pricing works differently depending on where you are in the lineup. On R1S Premium and Premium Long Range, captain’s chairs require the Sound and Vision package, and the combination runs $4,000 with Black Mountain or $6,000 with Ocean Coast, which in both cases is $1,500 more than the same interior with the bench. On R1S Performance and Quad, where Sound and Vision is already standard, the chairs start at $1,500 with Black Mountain Signature, move to $4,000 with Ocean Coast Signature, and reach $4,500 with Slate Sky Signature. Ocean Coast Signature and Slate Sky Signature are only offered in the captain’s chairs configuration.

The bench stays in the lineup and is the default seating in every interior. It is standard at no cost with Black Mountain on R1S Premium and with Black Mountain Signature on Performance and Quad, and it is what the Ocean Coast interior comes with on Premium at $4,500.

A new standard wheel on the R1T

The R1T picks up a 20-inch Adventure All-Season wheel and tire package as its standard fitment. It is a no cost option on R1T Premium and R1T Performance, and it pairs a Goodyear all-season tire with the same wheel design used on the now discontinued 20-inch All-Terrain wheel. Owners who have seen that wheel in person will recognize it immediately, since only the tire has changed.

On that combination, Rivian rates the R1T at 300 miles on Premium, 380 miles on Premium Long Range, and 348 miles on Performance. That sits below the 329 mile Premium figure quoted above because the higher number comes from the 22-inch Range and 22-inch Sport Dark wheels, so a Premium buyer taking the standard 20-inch package is trading roughly 29 miles for the all-season tire and the smaller wheel.

The wheel is not offered on the R1S in any trim.

The rest of the wheel lineup carries over with the same broad restrictions as before. The 22-inch Sport Bright is limited to R1S Premium and Premium Long Range. The 22-inch Range and the 22-inch Sport Dark are available on Premium, Premium Long Range, and Performance but not on Quad. The 20-inch All-Terrain Dark comes only through the All-Terrain Package on Premium Long Range and Performance. Quad continues to run its own set of three, the 22-inch Super Sport, the 20-inch Dune Satin Graphite All-Terrain, and the 22-inch Sport Burnished Bronze.

Colors, packages, and the rest of the changes

Esker Silver arrives as the default no cost color on both the R1T and the R1S, replacing LA Silver. It joins Glacier White, Forest Green, Half Moon Grey, Midnight, Rivian Blue, Red Canyon, and Storm Blue, with Red Canyon and Storm Blue restricted to Performance and Quad.

The Darkout package is standard on every R1T trim and on R1S Performance and Quad. On R1S Premium it is unlocked by wheel choice, specifically the 22inch Sport Dark, the 20-inch All-Terrain Dark, and the 20-inch Adventure All-Season. The Satin package is not offered on any R1T trim, nor on R1S Performance or R1S Quad, which leaves R1S Premium and Premium Long Range as the only place it appears.

Tow hooks remain standard across the full R1 lineup, as does the Utility Panel with Air Compressor. The power tonneau remains standard on every R1T. The All-Terrain Package, which brings the 20-inch All-Terrain Dark wheel, runs $4,950 on R1T Premium Long Range and R1T Performance, $5,700 on R1S Premium Long Range, and $4,700 on R1S Performance.

The Performance Upgrade has been renamed the Power Upgrade and holds at $5,000, now offered on Premium only. Autonomy+ stays at $2,500 as a one time purchase or $49 per month, and Connect+ stays at $15 per month.

  1. I just want the new phone charging pad. Hoping they make that available to everyone soon to buy!

  2. Jose – first, thanks for everything you do. I’ve learned a ton from you as I’ve moved closer to buying my first (and second) EV. We’re in the November-December window for an R2 and I was hoping Rivian would give me a reason to order an R1T as well.

I’ve been thinking about an R1T since I demoed one this spring. I’ve come to pulling the trigger a couple of times, but ultimately pulled back when they stopped offering Ocean Coast with Rivian Blue. That was my compromise. What I really want is Slate Sky with Rivian Blue in a Tri/Performance option. Only offering one interior choice for a vehicle with a six-figure price tag is absurd. The analogy to shopping Ford landed. For a flagship vehicle, Rivian’s limiting of options is making for a pretty crap consumer experience.

I assume there’s some forecasting reason behind it, but it’s not like they’re selling millions (or really even 10s of thousands) of R1Ts. If you can put Slate Sky in a truck with silver paint, you can put it in a blue one too. Continuing that particular flavor of nonsense into ’27 and pairing it with the only even slightly meaningful enhancement being 20″ all-season tires (no option for the sport dark wheels), I can’t imagine a more underwhelming release. I suppose we should be happy they come in more than 2 exterior colors. If I were in the market for an R1S, I suppose the captain’s chairs would be a nice option, but unless I’m missing something, there’s absolutely nothing even a little compelling here for R1T guys. Meh.

I get that Rivian is R2-focused right now, but this is a pointless excuse to bump the model year. I hate how right everyone saying not to expect much was. I expected little and somehow we still got less.

Halo controls, a glove box … something other than a dark-on-dark interior for my preferred paint color; almost anything would have given me enough reason to buy. It’s the disappointment talking, perhaps, but this is the rare release that has made an eager buyer less likely to spend his money anytime soon.

Given how underwhelming this is, and with talk of LIDAR coming to R2 early next year, do you think there’s any chance this is a stopgap to a proper GEN3 early next year, or is this really it for the next 12 months?

    • I’d sadly expect the R1 to get put way on the back burner until R2 generates a profit. Every dollar needs to be committed to getting profitable now that their big fixed expenses are online or else they’ll simply don’t reach escape velocity. It’s painful as an R1S Gen 2 owner!
