RJ Scaringe Talks Tariffs, Supply Chain Challenges, and Rivian’s U.S. Focus

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe appeared on The Claman Countdown to discuss how the EV maker is responding to new 25% tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on imported vehicles and parts. While Rivian builds its vehicles in Illinois and develops key components like motors and software in-house, Scaringe acknowledged the company still relies on a global supply chain—including parts that originate from or are processed overseas.

“The supply chain is complex,” Scaringe said. “We build the big pieces here, but many components still come from suppliers abroad.” He noted that rare earth metals, essential for EV motors, are mostly processed in China, making the impact of tariffs difficult to avoid.

Despite these challenges, Scaringe highlighted Rivian’s continued investment in U.S. manufacturing and its efforts to localize more of its supply chain. He also touched on the broader EV market, pointing out the lack of affordable electric options under $50,000. He believes expanding consumer choice is key to increasing EV adoption.

With the R2 and R3 on the horizon, Rivian is betting on a wider lineup to meet growing demand and navigate an increasingly complex trade environment.
