RJ Scaringe Shows Off R2’s “Starfish” Suspension Design

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has once again dropped a juicy detail about the upcoming R2, this time focusing on the rear suspension setup. In a new post on X, RJ shared images and explained that the R2 will use a multi-link rear suspension featuring five stamped steel links and an isolated rear subframe, which is a design aimed at delivering both premium ride quality and sharp handling, while keeping costs in check.
He also highlighted Rivian’s new “starfish” forged aluminum rear knuckle, which integrates bushings for each of the five links. This clever bit of engineering reduces unsprung mass, which not only improves ride comfort but also helps keep the R2 feeling nimble and responsive.

This is just the latest in a series of behind-the-scenes looks RJ has shared as Rivian gears up for the R2 launch. In recent months, he’s teased everything from body harness improvements and drive unit packaging to potential hints of LiDAR integration. While Rivian hasn’t revealed everything about the R2 yet, it’s clear they’re putting a lot of thought into balancing cost, performance, and build efficiency.
If RJ’s excitement is anything to go by, “Can’t wait for folks to get to drive R2 — it’s sooo good!!” then we’re in for a treat when the R2 hits the road in 2026.
