RivianOS 2.0 First Look and Why It Feels So Fast

The thing that stuck with me on the R2 was not the range or the price. It was the software. RivianOS 2.0 is a full rewrite, and the first thing you notice is how quick it is.

I have spent enough time in my R1 to know exactly where the old software makes you wait. There is always a small pause before the HVAC panel comes up, and the menus tend to catch for a second when you dig into them. On the R2 that pause is simply gone. You touch something and it is already there, and after a few minutes of it you start to realize how much that lag had been wearing on you without you ever really noticing.

It makes my R1 feel super slow and old, and I say that as someone who loves my R1.

The good news, if you are sitting in an R1 right now, is that this is coming to you later this year. Same rewrite, same speed, on the car you already own.

I put together a full walkthrough so you can watch it move instead of taking my word for it. It is right below.

    • Good question. I would think more the chip than rewrite… but it does feel a bit laggy to me when you are moving around maps umped to a phone/iPad. I get software capable companies like Tesla nd Rivian not offering CarPlay but you left with a computer that ages fast. no? Almost feels like the display subsystem should be modular tablet and can be upgraded every few years…
