Rivian Unveils the California Dune Edition: A Limited-Run R1 Built for the Sand

Rivian just unveiled the California Dune Edition, a limited-run R1 built for those who crave adventure in the sand. Inspired by the golden hues of California’s desert dunes, this edition brings fresh colors, upgraded off-road gear, and serious power.
Under the hood, it’s built on the Tri-Motor R1 platform, meaning 850 horsepower, 1,103 lb-ft of torque, and a 0-60 time of 2.9 seconds. It’s got an EPA-estimated range of 329 miles, plus Soft Sand mode as standard to help you glide over dunes with ease.
Rivian didn’t stop at performance—this edition also comes with new 20” All-Terrain Wheels (including a color-matched option), a reinforced underbody shield, and plenty of adventure-ready accessories like dark MAXTRAX recovery boards, crossbars, and a new Gen 3 powered tonneau cover on the R1T. The redesigned cover is more like the Cybertruck’s, featuring smaller slits for better durability and a sleeker look.
Unlike other Tri-Motor R1s, which come with the Ascend interior, the California Dune Edition features a modified Adventure interior with a unique two-tone Sandstone and Black Mountain combo. This setup brings a more rugged yet refined feel, paired with easy-to-clean flooring designed to handle sandy excursions. The exterior also gets Rivian’s Darkout Package, adding a sharp contrast to the new California Dune paint color.
“The design team was inspired by the color and warmth of the beautiful, sun-drenched dunes of Southern California to create our first bespoke, limited-edition variant of the R1 vehicles,” said Jeff Hammoud, Rivian’s Chief Design Officer. “In this unique expression, we embraced the balance between the vast, quiet terrain of the California dunes and the desire to create something that is both elevated and refined. It invites you to submit to the elements while offering colors and materials that are easy to clean but look just as good when they aren’t.”
If you want to see it in person, Rivian’s bringing it to SXSW in Austin from March 7-15, along with select Rivian Spaces. Pricing starts at $99,900 for the R1T and $105,900 for the R1S, and it’s available to order now on Rivian.com.
