Rivian R3X Is a Couple Years Away, RJ Scaringe Says

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe has given the first real timeline for the R3X, and the short version is there is still a wait ahead. Speaking with The Drive in Park City, Utah, Scaringe confirmed the rally-inspired model is coming and placed it “a couple of years away.”

The comments came on the latest episode of The Drivecast, recorded around the R2 media event. Asked directly about the R3X, Scaringe said “they’ll come,” then added that it is “a couple of years away.” He also pushed back on the idea that Rivian is still figuring it out. The company has, in his words, “a really clear idea on timeline.” It just has not announced one publicly.

That detail is the part worth noting. Rivian appears to know when the R3X is landing and is choosing to hold the date. The R3X was revealed back in March 2024 as a surprise alongside the R2 and R3, so the missing window has left a lot of people guessing in the years since.

For anyone newer to the lineup, the R3X is the spicier, off-road-focused version of the R3, Rivian’s smaller and more affordable crossover that sits below the R2. Rivian has always said R2 comes first.

The phrasing is vague, but it does rule a few things out. Taken at face value, the R3X is not a 2026 or 2027 vehicle. It points toward the back half of the decade.

  1. Let’s get the R2 out the door first before we even begin having a conversation about R3/X lol

  2. That makes perfect sense since the new plant in Georgia that will build it wonโ€™t be ready until 2028.
