Rivian R2 Crosses 2,000 VINs as Deliveries Ramp

Rivian appears to have crossed 2,000 built R2 VINs, either in the last few days or right about now.
The signal comes from a friend of the site who is taking delivery in just a few days. His VIN falls in the 20xx range, which indicates Rivian has already assigned and built past the 2,000 mark.
Worth being clear about what that number actually means, though. Built is not the same as delivered. VINs are not handed out in a clean sequence, where car number 2,000 is the 2,000th customer to drive one off the lot. And a good chunk of these early builds are not retail cars at all. Demo units at Rivian Spaces and Service Centers eat up some of them. There are executive cars in the mix, plus whatever Rivian is running for validation and testing miles. So the real customer delivery count is below 2,000, probably by a fair bit.
Still a real milestone for a vehicle that only recently started landing with owners.
This past week was quiet on the R2 front. No new wave of config or delivery emails I could see going out, which slowed the usual chatter. The deliveries themselves did not stop, though. I have watched plenty of owners post their pickups across the different platforms over the last several days, so the line keeps moving even when things go dark on the email side.
On my end, nothing yet. No VIN. No delivery window either, and no email telling me to get ready. I keep circling back to the same question: whether the way I spec’d mine is part of the holdup. I went Launch Green with the 20″ All-Terrain wheels, and I have started to wonder if that exact combination just was not in the production mix yet when these earlier VINs were getting assigned.
No way to really know right now. Pace looks like it is picking up, though, and once a company is past 2,000 built, the assignment emails for the rest of us usually aren’t that far behind. Or that is the hope anyway.
