Rivian R1 Is Getting a New Magnetic Wireless Phone Charger

The R1 is getting a new magnetic wireless phone charger, and we now have photos of it installed in a production R1 heading to a customer. This is the same charger that was previously confirmed for the upcoming R2.
The new charger uses two magnets to hold your phone in place, which is a real upgrade from the previous versions Rivian has shipped. If you’ve ever hit a bump and watched your phone slide off the pad, you know exactly why this matters.
We got our hands on one and tested it with an iPhone 17 Pro Max. Output came in at around 5W, which puts this in standard Qi territory rather than Qi2. That’s a bit of a bummer since Qi2 can push up to 15W, but it’s still a meaningful improvement in usability over what’s currently in the truck.
What we don’t know yet is whether that 5W ceiling is an R1 hardware limitation or if R2 will have the same experience or better. And for existing R1 owners hoping to get the upgrade, there are no details on a retrofit path at this time.

2023 GEN1?
More importantly, last upgrade allowed the iPhone to pair with the Rivian for additional functionality. WHAT ABOUT THE SAMSUNG? And while I have your ear (or eye)! Are we ever going to see a replacement for lost GEN1 KEY FOBs? I’ve been waiting since last June.
Walter I have a key fob from my former gen 1 R1S that is like new. $100?
Will it work on an R1T?
Yes!
Check to see if your service center will pair a fob that wasn’t purchased directly from them. Mine wouldn’t.
I don’t think the 5W is an R1 hardware limitation since the R1 wireless charger from S00nish is capable of 15W.
Probably will appear in the gear shop in time for summer road trips. We’ll see.
Honestly I’ve not heard of a single owner that is happy with the phone warmer. This is a class action waiting to happen and they should be retrofitting them on every vehicle delivered.
Anyone considering upgrading the worthless Gen1 charger should seriously consider this:

I’m not affiliated, just a customer. We’ve been super happy with ours, using Pixel Snap chargers since we’re Pixel users. The “hidden” storage compartment for small items is an added bonus.
That only works on Gen 1 R1 platform. I have it in my R1S, it’s wonderful. Unfortunately, they didn’t make one for Gen 2
