Rivian announced on social media today that Pet Cam is coming to R2 with the next software update in October, building on the Pet Comfort Mode R2 owners already have.
Pet Cam runs through Pet Comfort Mode. Once Pet Comfort is on and you’ve stepped away, you can open the Rivian app for a live view of the cabin or get a snapshot on your lock screen every minute.
Pet Comfort first came to R2 in 2026.24, where it keeps the cabin at a set temperature and shows climate information on the center display so anyone walking by can see your pet is okay. You can turn it on from quick controls or the Climate panel.
Rivian notes that you’ll need to activate Pet Comfort Mode before stepping away from the vehicle any time pets are inside, since it’s what keeps the cabin comfortable and it’s also what powers Pet Cam. If you forget to turn it on, there won’t be a camera feed to check from your phone.
If you’re an R1 owner hoping this makes its way over, it won’t, since R1 doesn’t have the hardware Pet Cam needs.
I fully expect the lock screen snapshots to be how I use Pet Cam most on my R2, since a quick glance at my phone is easier than keeping the app open while I’m in a store. I’ll share the release notes with you all as soon as the October update starts rolling out.
It doesn’t make sense that they can’t make petcam work on the Gen 2 R1’s. There’s cameras behind the glass on the rearview mirror. I’m actually not sure why they haven’t added the ability to look inside the cabin with gear guard for security purposes like Tesla allows.
Would like to know from Rivian if this is going to come to Gen 2 R1 and if it is not, why. Seriously you have to respect the R1 owners.
As Jose mentioned, R1’s do not have the necessary camera hardware for this. The interior camera in the rearview mirror of R1’s is an infrared camera, which is not useful for viewing the cabin or any pets inside. It’s mainly there to watch the driver’s eyes during handsfree driving.
