Rivian Launches New Powered Tonneau Cover V2 in R1 Shop for R1T

Rivian has officially launched the redesigned Powered Tonneau Cover, first seen on the California Dune R1T, and it’s now available in the R1 Shop as the Powered Tonneau Cover V2. If you want to add it to your R1T, it’ll cost $2,000, up from the $1,500 price tag of the previous version.

For R1T Tri Motor owners, there’s no need to worry about the added cost—the Powered Tonneau Cover now comes standard on those trucks at no extra charge.

So, what’s new? The biggest change is the design. The updated cover features small slits that roll into a compartment right behind the Gear Tunnel, making for a much quieter operation compared to the original. The previous version was never discontinued, but this new design aims to address some of the durability and noise concerns that owners had.

For current R1T owners wondering if they’ll be able to retrofit this new version—good news! Rivian has confirmed that the Powered Tonneau Cover V2 will eventually be available in the Gear Shop. While there’s no official timeline yet, this means that existing R1T owners who either skipped the original powered cover or want to upgrade from the older version will get the chance to do so in the near future.

  1. When you say for For R1T Tri Motor owners, there’s no need to worry about the added cost—the Powered Tonneau Cover now comes standard on those trucks at no extra charge.
Is the current owner of the R1T tri going to get those Tonneau upgrades for free?

    • If your current tonneau breaks, they’ll replace it with the V2 otherwise you’ll be able to buy it from the Gear Shop when it is released there.

  2. That’s great news! I couldn’t configure with one last year when it was suspended and just the other day I tried to add one with a service ticket. Rivian got back to me and said they weren’t installing them yet but my name was on a list for when they do. Very excited

  3. This is great news about eventually being added to the Gear Shop. However when I bought my R1T (12/23) adding the powered tonneau wasn’t even an option and I was told it would be in the Gear Shop in spring of 2024. When spring of 2024 rolled by, I was then informed it would in the last quarter of 2024. Now here we are almost Spring of 2025, and now we have the V2 of the powered tonneau, and again a promise of being in the Gear Shop for those that never had the opportunity to get it during the R1T purchase. I guess I’ll believe it, when I see it. Don’t want to be so negative about it and I still hope it is soon but waiting for over a year now for it.

    • I feel ya on that one!
This was definitely a rushed component/feature/add-on same with the camp kitchen which will likely never see a first party component for use in the gear tunnel.

Just goes to show you never base a buying decision on something that isn’t already built and available.
