Rivian has temporarily stopped delivering R2 vehicles finished in Half Moon Grey. The hold was confirmed today through sources and follows the bumper mismatch an owner posted about earlier this week, where a car showed up at the service center with a front bumper in a different shade of grey than the body.
Around 800 vehicles are affected.
The problem appears to sit with plastic exterior pieces that get painted separately before they are put on the vehicle. Somewhere in that process, the wrong parts got matched to the wrong bodies, which is how a Half Moon Grey R2 ended up wearing a bumper in El Cap Granite (or at least a completely different shade of grey), a color Rivian uses on R1 and does not offer on R2 at all.
The owner in that first case, posting as u/andymoog on r/RivianR2, got the call at 8 am on his pickup day. Six hours before he was supposed to take the car. He was given three options, none of them fast, and service ended up canceling the appointment outright rather than letting him drive off with a bumper they would swap later.
Holding an entire color is a bigger move than fixing one car, and with roughly 800 units in the batch, it is easier to understand why they did it that way. Pre-painted parts are inventoried on their own, separate from bodies, so a mix-up there can travel a long way before anyone standing in front of a finished vehicle notices anything.
No word yet on when Half Moon Grey deliveries start back up. Anyone waiting on that color should probably plan around a delay.

I hope that the paint is better than my 2024 F 150 it scratches so easy and im sick of it
How did it leave the factory with a color mismatch? Serious QC issue where no one is empowered or confident enough to say hold it?
Rivian…….come on now. This isn’t good. Fix the problem and get back on track!
That seems to be what they’re doing. Others have posted that maybe factory QC should have caught it, and have a point, but I’m not surprised that a totally new vehicle has issues during production ramp. Remember the reputation the early Tesla Model 3s had for imperfections (and eventually when I bought in 2023, it was flawless, Tesla having worked out all the issues).
If this is the worst issue in their ramp, I’d say it’s a raging success. They must have delivered a few thousand units by now and I haven’t seen one Reddit post re panel gaps/QA or parts breaking.
I wonder if Rivian would let affected buyers swap to a more colorful color…would mean
I’m taking delivery at 10 AM tomorrow morning of my half moon grey R2 😬. Let’s see how that goes… my delivery was scheduled for last Saturday and got pushed back four days by Rivian…
Good luck and congrats! Keep me posted please 🙂
Mine was set for delivery yesterday but they moved it to next week at the last minute. Assuming this is why.
I was set for this Saturday and also got pushed to next week. Seems I jumped the gun on returning my SIXT subscription car
Speaking of reasons for order delays, does including a compact spare with your R2 configuration have any effect on your order priority?
From what I’ve seen from others, that typically will come afterword via a service appointment.
Picked up my HMG today – no rescheduling required.
I noticed this ‘grey mismatch’ on the demo vehicle my wife and I had for a test drive recently.
The charger flap was a totally different grey to the rest of the vehicle. I thought it was odd that the Rivian staff had not caught it prior to offering out to potential customers to see.
