Rivian Challenges Ohio’s Direct Sales Ban in Federal Court

According to The Verge, Rivian has filed a federal lawsuit against the state of Ohio, challenging its ban on direct-to-consumer vehicle sales. Rivian argues the law is “irrational,” unconstitutional, and unfairly protects traditional auto dealers at the expense of consumer choice.

The suit points out that Tesla is allowed to sell directly in Ohio through a special agreement, while other EV makers like Rivian are excluded. Rivian calls this “pure economic protectionism” and says the policy reduces competition and drives up prices for buyers.4

This is Rivian’s first lawsuit of its kind. Other EV brands, including Tesla and Volkswagen’s Scout, have faced or filed similar challenges in states with strict franchise laws. Rivian says it’s time for these outdated rules to change and that Ohioans deserve better access to new vehicle options.

  1. Awesome news! I hope Oklahoma is next, the traditional auto dealership structure is a cartel that does not have consumer interest at heart – they are purely trying to protect their enterprise. Go Rivian!!!
