Rivian Adds Half Moon Grey to R1 Lineup, Replacing El Cap Granite

Rivian has a new color option for the R1T and R1S: Half Moon Grey, a soft, cool-toned grey that’s making its way over from the R2 reveal last month.

If you were following the R2 coverage from last month, you already got a preview of this one. It’s named after Half Moon Bay, the coastal California town, and Rivian leaned into that inspiration in a story published this morning, describing the color as capturing the kind of muted, coastal light you get off the Pacific.

It fills the gap left by El Cap Granite, which Rivian quietly discontinued back in February. El Cap had a warmer, earthier tone to it, so Half Moon Grey is a bit of a shift in that direction of the palette. Cooler, more neutral, definitely more versatile if you’re trying to stay understated.

For anyone who’s been on the fence about ordering and wasn’t feeling the current color options, this one’s worth a look. Grey tends to be a crowd-pleaser for resale too, which isn’t nothing.

It’ll be interesting to see how much of the R2’s color lineup eventually crosses over to R1. Half Moon Grey is a good first sign that Rivian’s not treating the two vehicles as totally separate universes.

  1. I had a Volkswagen for a couple of years, with a color similar to El Cap Granite, and had more drivers almost swerve into me without seeing me (about 8) than the rest of my 4+ decades of driving combined (driving other vehicles). Too similar to road color. I suspect that Half Moon Grey will be better for that, based on the photos above.
