R2 VIN numbers are now in the 9400s. Reddit user u/kekekelvin was assigned VIN 94xx on August 28th, the highest R2 VIN reported so far.
Day one reservation, invite on August 11th, order placed August 18th, VIN ten days after that. Rewind to mid July and VINs in the 4100s were landing with no delivery date attached while owners sat on vague answers about final checks for weeks at a stretch. That is a very different rhythm in about six weeks.
Zoom out and the pace has been remarkably consistent. Late June was around 209x, mid July was the low 4100s, and we are at 9,400 now, which works out to roughly 115 to 120 VINs a day across both stretches. Usual disclaimer applies, of course. A VIN in the 9400s does not mean 9,400 R2 exist, let alone that 9,400 have been delivered. VINs go out ahead of the build, they do not reach owners in order, and plenty of the early run went to demo units, executive vehicles, and internal testing.
Rivian needs somewhere around 21,000 to 23,700 vehicles a quarter in the back half to land inside its 65,000 to 70,000 guidance, and at 115 VINs a day, R2 by itself covers a little over 10,000 of that in a ninety day quarter. The rest is R1 and vans, which have been steady all year.
The Q3 delivery report is still the thing to watch. Assignment has never really been the bottleneck this year, the handover has, and a ten day turnaround from order to VIN is the first solid sign that the gap is tightening.

Ordered mine on 8/18 and received my VIN (lower 7k) two hours later. A few days later I saw someone was posting a VIN in the 8k. I guess mine is just sitting there ready to be delivered.
Exact same scenario. VIN 73xx assigned same day as the August 18 order. I wonder if they had been manufactured earlier, pulled by QC, remedied, and were now available for sale.

Getting jealous of these quick VIN turnarounds. Ordered 8/11 and still have no VIN assignment. Esker Silver w/ 20s and Black Crater. Seems like there are a lot of orders placed over the last couple of weeks without VIN assignments still.
Very odd how the VIN’s are assigned. I got my order invite on the morning of Aug 27. I submitted the order within 15 minutes (Catalina Cove, 21”, black interior). About 2 hours later I got a VIN assignment of 47xx.
I suspect this vehicle is sitting around somewhere and it will possibly be delivered in the next couple weeks (to Van Nuys). Or maybe it has a component hold issue like your HVAC compressor.
It’s kind of useless to speculate on these VIN assignments without location and spec details.

WOW! pretty quick turn from order to delivery. Let me know if they actually meet that date. I hope so.
VIN obsession and attempted vehicle tracking is not only pointless and wholly inaccurate but can lead to VIN derangement syndrome. Drive and enjoy whatever vehicle one already has in the driveway to avoid potential institutionalization.
Alternatively, it’s just nice and fun to see where things stand… also slow news day LOL
I’ve gotta wonder how common the quick turnaround is. I had a day-1 reservation, got invited to order on 8/18 and ordered that same day, and am still waiting for a VIN.
The config is relevant. I ordered Catalina Cove w/black interior on 21″ rims. Seems like CC is a very common color preference, so I am probably competing with a lot of people for a vehicle from a CC batch (given that they produce colors in batches because they have to clean out the paint shop every time they switch colors).
I’m patient. My current car is still in good working order. It will come when it comes. That said…still a bit jealous of the quick turnarounds I’ve seen, with some reporting hours to VIN and days to delivery.
I ordered yesterday and just got a VIN today of 87xx. What does that mean? Why would a new VIN be hundreds less than others?
VINs are not assigned in order and it all depends on configuration and what’s available / being made.
It appears that Rivian had few production issues with the R2 line. Some minor stuff on low VINs, but nothing that has stopped the line completely. As they ramp up daily production to hit this 115-day goal, they will also open a second shift at the end of the month. That wil probably start slow, like the first month of the first shift, but based on lessons learned, should be able to ramp up to full production quickly. I can see Rivian beating its year-end targets very handily, and even moving up the premium version by a couple of months.
Picking ours up today at the Seattle Service Center. Day 3 deposit, order invitation 4 weeks ago. VIN 6330, Catalina Cove, black interior, 21” wheels. I already have a 2022 R1T, so this one is for my wife. We will soon be an all-Rivian, all-EV family!
An interesting factoid: the Seattle Service Center said that they’re delivering 20-25 R2’s to customers every day. That’s 100/week!
At least, that’s what I heard them say.
