Introducing Rivian’s Cutting-Edge Autonomy Platform

Rivian has always been at the forefront of innovation in the electric vehicle market, and our latest development, the Rivian Autonomy Platform, is set to redefine the standards of autonomous driving. Developed entirely in-house, this platform is designed to deliver optimal performance while ensuring scalability for future updates and enhancements.

Cutting-Edge Perception Hardware and Software

At the heart of the Rivian Autonomy Platform lies a powerful combination of new perception hardware and software. The system integrates inputs from 11 internally developed high-resolution cameras and five advanced radars, capable of performing over 250 trillion operations per second. This level of computational power is unparalleled in the industry, ensuring our platform excels at perceiving and processing different types of information with exceptional accuracy and redundancy.

Unmatched Camera Technology

Our suite of 11 high-resolution cameras, including state-of-the-art 4K HDR units, provides 360-degree visibility around the vehicle. These cameras can see three times farther than our previous system and anticipate up to 10 seconds ahead at highway speeds. With the highest camera megapixel count of any electric vehicle in North America, our system offers superior dynamic range, ensuring clear vision in high-contrast scenarios such as tunnel entrances and exits and low-light conditions like fog or nighttime driving. Additionally, a driver-facing camera embedded in the rearview mirror monitors driver fatigue and distraction, enhancing safety when the vehicle is in Enhanced Highway Assist mode, which is slated for release later this year.

Advanced Radar Capabilities

The platform’s five advanced radars, including a Front Imaging Radar, detect objects up to 1,000 feet away, even in adverse weather and lighting conditions. These radars complement our surround-view cameras with overlapping fields of view, enabling simultaneous tracking of objects in all directions. This radar system serves as a crucial backup to the cameras, particularly when dirt or grime might obscure a camera lens, ensuring continuous and reliable detection.

Powerful Compute Module

The Rivian Autonomy Platform is powered by dual NVIDIA DRIVE Orin processors running DRIVE OS, which drive the Autonomy Compute Module in our second-generation R1 vehicles. This setup delivers ten times more computational performance than our previous system, ensuring rapid processing and response times.

AI-Driven Real-Time Response

Our platform leverages advanced AI software to anticipate, plan, and react in real-time. By incorporating architectural elements from large language models, known as “Vision Transformers,” the system can perceive and understand surroundings, predict the behavior of other road users, and prepare the vehicle for potential scenarios. The use of end-to-end training allows our system to continuously learn and improve over time, providing unparalleled quality and scalability.

Standard and Premium Features

The Rivian Autonomy Platform comes standard on all second-generation vehicles, offering a comprehensive suite of over a dozen safety and driver assistance features, including Highway Assist. This feature enables the vehicle to automatically steer, brake, and accelerate on select highways while engaged. These features will continue to be standard on all first-generation vehicles as well.

For those seeking an even broader set of capabilities, we offer the Rivian Autonomy Platform+, a premium version available on our second-generation vehicles. Initially, premium features will be offered at no additional charge. Lane Change on Command will be available via a software update this summer, followed by Enhanced Highway Assist later this year and expanded road coverage in the future.

With the Rivian Autonomy Platform, we are not just enhancing the driving experience but also paving the way for the future of autonomous driving. Our commitment to innovation and safety ensures that our customers receive the highest level of performance and reliability, now and in the years to come.
