During the 2024 SEMA Show, Rivian hosted a panel on the collision repair impact of the R1T and R1S, highlighting significant improvements in repairability and serviceability in their Gen 2 vehicles. Here are the key highlights:
Structural Material Transition
Rivian has shifted many structural components from aluminum to steel in Gen 2 vehicles. This change allows for conventional welding techniques like MIG and spot welding, making repairs simpler and reducing costs.
Front Frame Rail Section
A new front frame rail section compatible with both Gen 1 and Gen 2 models now provides a cost-effective alternative to complete “skateboard” replacements. This new section allows for localized repairs after low-speed impacts, reducing total repair costs.
Electronic Control Units Optimization
Gen 2 vehicles have consolidated ECUs from 17 to just 7, along with a 1.6-mile reduction in wiring. This streamlining improves diagnostic processes, reduces vehicle weight, and enhances reliability.
Serviceability Enhancements
New service-oriented features include a heated grid to prevent radar obstruction in icy weather and a redesigned front charge port with a replaceable faceplate, making minor impact repairs faster and less expensive.
Relocation of Side View Camera
The side view camera, originally in the wheel cladding for Gen 1, has been moved to the door mirror in Gen 2. This change eliminates the need for recalibration during fender repairs, making service less complex.
12V Battery Relocation
The 12V battery has been moved from the front of the vehicle in Gen 1 to under the passenger seat in Gen 2. This repositioning improves diagnostic accessibility, although full battery replacement requires seat removal. This change reflects Rivian’s focus on making maintenance more straightforward.
These enhancements from the SEMA 2024 panel demonstrate Rivian’s commitment to advancing repairability, improving service efficiency, and ultimately reducing ownership costs, benefiting both vehicle owners and repair professionals.
