EV Incentives Are Disappearing This Fall Under New Law

On July 3, 2025, the U.S. House officially passed President Donald Trump’s signature legislation, known as the “Big Beautiful Bill.” Among its many sweeping changes is the rollback of federal tax credits for electric vehicles and clean energy technologies. The bill is now headed to Trump’s desk for signing, which is expected to happen quickly.

This move marks a major turning point for the EV market in the United States, and companies like Rivian may feel the pressure almost immediately. Here’s what Rivian buyers and owners need to know.

Key Clean Energy Programs Being Cut

Several clean-energy initiatives that helped drive EV adoption and renewable upgrades will now be phased out:

  • $7,500 New EV Credit: Ends September 30, 2025
  • $4,000 Used EV Credit: Ends September 30, 2025
  • $7,500 Commercial EV Credit: Ends September 30, 2025
  • Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit: Ends June 30, 2026
  • Home Energy Efficiency Improvements Credit: Ends December 31, 2025
  • Residential Clean Energy Credit: Ends December 31, 2025
  • New Energy Efficient Home Credit: Ends June 30, 2026

These cuts affect everything from EV purchases and home charging station installations to rooftop solar and energy-efficient home upgrades.

To counter the loss of incentives, Rivian could offer limited-time lease deals, bundle home charger installations with remaining energy credits, and double down on its core appeal, adventure, innovation, and American-made quality, to keep demand strong.

If you’re considering a Rivian purchase, it’s smart to act fast. Here’s why:

  • To secure the $7,500 EV credit, your Rivian must be delivered before September 30, 2025.
  • Used EV shoppers have the same deadline to claim the $4,000 credit.
  • Planning to install a charger? Do it before mid-2026 to take advantage of the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit.

This legislation marks a major shift in the EV and clean energy landscape. For Rivian, a company that has grown rapidly thanks to favorable policy and increasing consumer demand, the next few months are critical. Without federal incentives to ease the high upfront cost of EVs, Rivian, and its buyers, will have to adapt quickly.
