Jony Ive’s LoveFrom Helped Shape Rivian’s First E-Bike
Rivian’s first electric bike might have Jony Ive’s design fingerprints all over it. According to a report by TechCrunch, LoveFrom, the design firm Ive started after leaving Apple, worked closely with Rivian on the project for about 18 months, beginning in early 2023.
The e-bike was part of a skunkworks program inside Rivian, led by former Specialized executive Chris Yu. The team grew to about 70 people with backgrounds from Apple, Google, Tesla, and REI. That group eventually spun out into a new company called Also, which recently raised $105 million in funding. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe now sits on Also’s board.
Scaringe has described the new vehicle as “bike-like,” with two wheels, a seat, a screen, and onboard computers. While the design has not been revealed, sources told TechCrunch that LoveFrom helped refine early prototypes, working closely with Rivian’s design team in Irvine on everything from aesthetics to user interface and packaging.
This is not the first time LoveFrom has worked with Rivian. Former employees told TechCrunch the firm has previously consulted on Rivian’s infotainment system and retail experiences. However, its role in the micromobility project was described as much more involved.
Also is expected to unveil its first product later this year. If the rumors are true, it will reflect the design sensibilities of one of the most influential creatives in tech.
