Amazon’s Robots Might Soon Deliver Your Packages
Amazon is getting ready to test humanoid robots that could soon deliver packages straight from Rivian electric vans to your doorstep.
A new report says Amazon built a testing course, nicknamed a “humanoid park”, at one of its San Francisco offices. It includes a real Rivian van so robots can practice hopping in and out, navigating walkways, and dropping off packages like a real delivery driver would.
Amazon already uses over 20,000 Rivian vans for deliveries and plans to grow that to 100,000 by 2030. For now, it’s still humans doing the actual deliveries, but these bots could eventually take over that last step.
One of the robots being tested comes from a Chinese company, Unitree, but Amazon plans to try out a few different models.
They’ve used robots in warehouses before, but testing them in real-world delivery scenarios is new territory, and a lot more unpredictable. Whether these bots can handle curbs, porches, and everything in between is exactly what Amazon is trying to find out.
