Rivian’s Free NACS Adapter is Going Away January 14

Update: Rivian has confirmed to RivianTrackr that beginning January 14th, any new vehicle purchased will not include the NACS DC Adapter for free and must be purchased from the Gear Shop.

Heads up, future Rivian owners—the free NACS DC adapter is about to be a thing of the past.

Until now, Rivian has been giving new buyers a free adapter so they can use Tesla’s Supercharger network. But starting later this month, that’s changing. Instead, you’ll need to buy it for $225 through the Rivian Gear Shop.

Who Still Gets the Free Adapter?

If you already have a VIN assigned (or get one before the change), don’t worry—you’ll still get the adapter for free.

What About Current Owners?

Great news! Even if you didn’t get an adapter when you first bought your Rivian, the company will be sending out free adapters to all current owners before the end of January. So, there’s no need to panic or buy one—you’ll get yours soon!

What You Need to Know

  • Already have your VIN? You’re good—you’ll get the free adapter.
  • Current Rivian owner? A free adapter is headed your way before the end of January.
  • Buying after the change? You’ll need to buy the adapter for $225 if you want to use Tesla Superchargers.

Final Takeaway

Sure, losing the free adapter might be a bummer, but Rivian’s making sure current owners and early buyers are taken care of. Plus, with more EVs moving toward NACS as the standard, having the adapter is a smart move if you like road trips or just want more charging options.

Keep an eye on your VIN status if you’re ordering soon—and if you’re already driving your Rivian, sit tight. Your free adapter will be on the way soon!

  1. Purchase mine in July and still haven’t received any type of update other than the initial opt-in. I know in September they said everyone would receive one by the end of January, hoping to see that email with the tracking sometime in the next week

    • Took delivery 9/30 and at the time was told I would receive it by January. At the time I didn’t even know it was a thing, so that was a pleasant surprise. If I recall there was something mentioned about some earlier purchasers not receiving them until later, but the idea was we should all be getting them by the end of January, but you might want to chat with someone at Rivian. I got an email last week that my order was on its way. I have a UPS tracking number but no delivery date yet. My spare tire on the other hand never arrived, or at least I was never notified if it did. Dropped of the car at a SC today for unrelated things but I mentioned it to the rep on Friday and he added it to the list, so maybe I’ll be getting it now.

  2. Ontario July received R1T 2024. September verified address. Dec 19 received after many emails asking where it is.
Rivian needs to understand/follow Webster’s dictionary explanation of Service.

  3. Received my R1S in early October and still no NACS adapter. Just texted my sales support asking a second time for a timeline.

  4. Super frustrating. I bought my R1S almost a year ago. Every few months I’d call about the adapter and was told to just wait and it would come. About 2 months ago I called and was told there was an email sent to “opt in” for the charger, but they could just do it for me over the phone. I check up about 2 weeks ago and they said they were gonna escalate my ticket, but the ticket was closed a few days later without any word.

So today I get off the phone and the person helping me said that the team that is in charge of the adapters is denying us because we missed an email back in July.

I can’t find this email despite having the exact date it was supposedly sent. I asked the person who’s helping me if this team could check that an email was actually sent. The team declined to verify if I had been sent an email and said my only option was to buy the adapter now.
