Tesla has quietly disabled access to its Magic Dock adapters at many U.S. Superchargers, leaving Rivian and other non-Tesla EV owners unable to charge at locations where they could just weeks ago. Rivian drivers, for example, have reported being unable to unlock the Magic Dock at Superchargers where they had previously charged successfully.
The Magic Dock, introduced to provide compatibility between Tesla’s Supercharger network and CCS-equipped EVs, offered a convenient charging solution. However, with access now disabled, Rivian drivers have fewer high-speed options unless they bring their own adapter such as my favorite A2Z NACS to CCS Typhoon Pro adapter.
While the Magic Dock is no longer working at many Superchargers, there’s still a workaround: non-Tesla EVs can use the Superchargers if they bring their own NACS adapter. This allows Rivian and other EV drivers to still access Tesla’s charging network, provided they have the proper equipment.
Tesla has yet to explain the change, leaving many to wonder whether it’s a temporary issue or a longer-term shift in policy. In the meantime, Rivian drivers looking to charge at a Supercharger should check if a Magic Dock is still operational at their location via apps like PlugShare or simply carry a NACS adapter to ensure compatibility.
