Rivian Confirms PIN to Drive and Digital Key Support
Rivian is set to enhance vehicle security and convenience by introducing two significant features: multi-factor driving authentication, commonly known as “PIN to Drive,” and support for CCC Digital Keys. These updates were recently confirmed by Rivian’s Chief Software Officer, Wassym Bensaid, in a post on X.
The “PIN to Drive” feature will require drivers to input a personal identification number before operating the vehicle. This added layer of security aims to deter unauthorized use, even if someone gains access to the vehicle’s key fob or digital key. The Rivian community has long advocated for this feature, emphasizing its importance in preventing theft and enhancing peace of mind.
Rivian’s adoption of the Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) Digital Key standard signifies a move towards seamless and secure vehicle access via smartphones. This technology allows users to lock, unlock, and start their vehicles using their mobile devices, even when the phone’s battery is low . The CCC Digital Key leverages Ultra-Wideband (UWB) and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technologies to ensure precise and secure communication between the vehicle and the user’s device.
By integrating these features, Rivian continues to demonstrate its commitment to innovation and user-centric design, aligning with industry trends and enhancing the overall driving experience.
How about getting rid of all the bugs and lag in the UX? I’d argue my Rivian software is slower today than it was when I got it Dec 2022.
Because security updates/enhancements should ALWAYS be prioritized above UX laginess.
Yes!
So security updates/enhancements have taken priority over the last 28 months? Wow, they can’t get their security updates squared away after 28 months? That’s concerning.
Does the CCC only apply to gen2?
Only Gen 2
I’ll echo the sentiments above. It would be nice to resolve the UX issues before releasing any new or splashy features. Also, how is this going to work when valet parking? Do you have to create a PIN that valet is going to have to remember on top of having to already not lose the key card? (Ive had 2 different valet locations have to search when trying to find my “key” to retrieve my R1S. I’m already of a mind to purchase a key fob just for valet parking.
