RivianTrackr Hangouts Episode 2: Rivian’s VP of Autonomy Reveals Unmapped Roads Coming to Gen 2

We sat down with James Philbin, Rivian’s VP of Autonomy and AI, for an in-depth conversation about where Rivian is headed with its self-driving tech — and why they’re taking a very different path from the rest of the industry.

James shared his thoughts on Rivian’s autonomy roadmap, what makes their AI stack unique, and how safety, redundancy, and real-world data collection shape everything they do. We also talked about whether people actually want full self-driving cars, how off-road autonomy fits into the Rivian lifestyle, and what’s coming next.

James also gave us an exclusive: support for unmapped roads is coming later this year for Gen 2 Rivian owners.

  1. Unmapped roads should be standard for both gens. The cameras in my gen 1 are more than good enough to see road lines. And the mapping takes forever, our biggest cross country highway isn’t even close to half mapped yet for driver+.

  2. Yes. The MobileEye sensor suite in the G1 is similar to that in, for example, my wife’s 2018 Leaf.

They made years of promises concerning G1 ADAS capability, and when they announced G2, they were emphatic that any feature G1 *could* do, it *would* do.

I’m going to start rallying G1 owners on this topic, probably starting on Reddit.
