Rivian Shares R2 Updates: Cost Optimization, Winter Testing, and Factory Expansion

Rivian shared big updates on the R2 in yesterday’s Q4 2024 webinar. The team is focused on cost control and production efficiency. They just finished sourcing materials and completed tooling trials for key body panels. This moves the R2 closer to production.

The R2’s design is built for simplicity. Rivian is using large high-pressure die castings instead of many smaller parts. This reduces connection points and speeds up production. Fewer parts also help cut costs, making the R2 more affordable.

Winter testing is done on the first R2 development vehicles. Rivian tested performance in snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. These tests ensure the R2 works well in extreme conditions. Passing them is a major step forward.

Rivian is also expanding its Normal, Illinois, factory. The building is going up fast, and new equipment is being installed. This sets the stage for mass production when the R2 is ready.

The focus is efficiency and cost savings. Fewer parts, a streamlined build, and a factory ready for volume—if Rivian hits the promised price point, the R2 could be a game-changer.
