Normal Approves $3M Infrastructure Project for Rivian Expansion

The Town of Normal is all in on Rivian’s expansion. The council just gave the green light to a set of resolutions that will help the automaker grow west of its current factory, including a plan to reimburse Rivian up to $3 million for extending a sewer line.

The unanimous vote happened without any discussion showing how much the town supports Rivian’s future. The new 18-inch sewer line will run along West College Avenue and across Rivian Motorway, filling a gap in service that town officials say is key for continued growth and attracting more business.

The total cost of the project has climbed to $4 million, but Normal will cover 75% of it. The town has until the end of 2031 to pay Rivian back, using funds from property taxes, the sewer fund, or other revenue sources.

With this approval, Rivian’s expansion plans are moving forward smoothly. The upcoming R2 SUV and future developments in Normal just got another big step closer to reality.
